How was Lewis Capaldi discovered?
It’s hard to miss Lewis Capaldi – if not only for his music, for his brilliant banter too. He’s gained popularity as a likeable and genuine character with emotive, heartfelt tunes. Like many up and coming artists, this singer-songwriter was originally discovered by self-releasing a track on SoundCloud. It was this that caught the attention of his now manager.
In 2017 there was a real buzz happening around him and by 2018 he was touring in the USA and Europe, as an exciting new talent. This enabled him to collaborate with big names like Jessie Reyez, James Bay, Grammy-winning producer Malay and One Direction star Niall Horan and attracted the attention of big hitters including Ellie Goulding and Ed Sheeran.
Who is Lewis Capaldi?
Born on 7th October 1996, Capaldi has gone from writing in a back room in West Lothian, to playing internationally renowned gigs and venues. He was nominated for the Critics’ Choice at the 2019 Brit Awards (alongside two other nominations) and for Song of the Year at the Grammys in 2020.

On 17 May 2019, he released his first full album, Divinely Uninspired to a Hellish Extent, bagging the number one place on the UK Albums Chart for six weeks.
The single Before You Go from the same album, became his second UK singles chart-topper on 31 January 2020. Capaldi joked that this coincided with Britain leaving the European Union, saying on social media:
”Just realised my song is number one on the day Brexit happens and it’s called ‘Before You Go.”

Shortly after, he sold-out legendary Glasgow venue King Tut’s Wah Wah Hut on the strength of his Spotify hit. He also made sure he was uploading all his tracks to YouTube, as well as Spotify, gaining lots of fans there too. It was from 2017 onwards that Capaldi hit the spotlight, and by 2019 he was huge. Zane Lowe premiered Someone You Loved on Apple’s Beats 1 radio on the day of release and he had the chance to perform on BBC Radio 1’s Live Lounge, choosing a cover of Lady Gaga’s Shallow from A Star Is Born.
Working with established big stars can be a fast track to fame, something that has certainly given Capaldi a great platform to showcase what he can do. As the support act to Rag N Bone Man, Sam Smith and Kodaline, his fan base increased massively.

There’s been some controversy around this. His net worth was reported to be 10 million, something Capaldi took to Instagram to query, claiming he had just £200 in the bank. In reality, it’s probably nearer the £7.8 million mark – but likely to grow considerably.
Who is Lewis Capaldi signed to?
He was initially signed to the German branch of Universal Music Group – specifically the Vertigo Berlin division. His releases are distributed in the UK by Virgin EMI Records and in North America by Capitol Records. He is managed by Ryan Walter – who scouted him after hearing Bruises on SoundCloud.
When did Lewis Capaldi release his first song?
He later released his first track “Bruises” on 31 March 2017. But this was by no means his first-ever song. He began writing as a child, the first being a number called The Show Must Go On about the credit crunch. This was penned at the tender age of 11 and while Capaldi says it wasn’t up to much, it shows an early commitment to making music. His songs are melodious and often great as audition numbers, especially if you need an a cappella number.
Where does Lewis Capaldi come from?
He comes from a town called Bathgate, in West Lothian, Scotland – not far from the home of Britain’s Got Talent legend and fellow singer, Susan Boyle. This is around halfway between the big cities of Glasgow and Edinburgh. He may live between the two but has often said he has a much stronger loyalty toward the west coast. He was born in Glasgow and lived there until he was four – so he often says he comes from Glasgow, as opposed to Bathgate.
Where does Lewis Capaldi live now?
Lewis says he still lives at home with his mum and dad, in his bedroom featuring New York themed wallpaper. While there was speculation he might move to the music industry powerhouse Los Angeles, he has told fans that he’ll head to Deniston in Glasgow, if and when he does leave his parent’s place.
When did Lewis Capaldi start singing?
Like many successful artists, the Scottish star began at a young age. He also learned to play the drums and is an accomplished guitarist. In an interview with GC Magazine, he talked about the first time he discovered this passion.
“The first time I played in front of a live audience, I realised I wanted to be a musician. I was about four years old and had always liked music […] I was on holiday at some caravan place in France. There was a band playing, but people could come up and ask if they could sing a tune.
“At the time I was obsessed with this wee Queen CD I got out of a newspaper that had “We Will Rock You” and “We Are The Champions” on it, so I just went up and asked if I could sing “We Will Rock You”. Twenty minutes after, I went up and asked to do the second tune. That was the first time I figured out that I liked being in front of people singing. It was basically when I thought that I’d like to show off professionally.”
Lewis states his most influential albums as being:
- The Maccabees – ‘Given To The Wild’
- Bob Dylan – ‘Bringing It All Back Home’
- Fleetwood Mac – ‘Rumours’
- Kanye West – ‘My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy’
- Bill Withers – ‘As I Am’

“Me and Lewis used to go to lessons together, we went through two guitar teachers. Lewis was a lot better with self-teaching. From the age of 12, he always wanted to be a musician. The actual odds of anyone ever making it is really slim, so I was quite happy having it as a wee pass time.”
