Bonus Open Mic Nights in Leeds

The Fox and Newt: Tower of Song Open Mic

The Fox and Newt: Tower of Song Open Mic

Hosted by Nicky Bray and Carl Flattery—both singer-songwriter who’ve been playing in local bands around Leeds for years—this open mic has been running since 2013 and is a well-loved and popular night.

It’s held in the upstairs room of the Fox & Newt pub in Leeds city centre (opposite Leeds City College) – performers bring their own instruments and they provide a PA and venue sound engineer.

The aim of the night is to welcome, encourage and inspire songwriters of all styles and abilities to write songs and to provide a supportive and inclusive environment in which to perform them.  They also set a different theme and musical style each month, based on audience suggestions from the previous month’s event; past themes include, “Beginnings”, “Black sheep of the family” and “Celebrity crushes”, and past musical styles include, “One-minute songs”, “Bond themes” and “60s girl groups”.

They find that most people relish the challenge of writing to a theme, but they are also welcome to play original songs which aren’t on theme – the only rule is that covers aren’t allowed, due to the aim to encourage songwriting.  There’s always a really fun and friendly atmosphere – the audience is really attentive and respectful during the performances, apart from whooping and cheering at the appropriate moments!

It’s always brilliant to see the different ways in which people interpret the same theme, and to see their regulars often venture outside their comfort zone when experimenting with new subject matter, styles, instruments and techniques.  Over the years they’ve seen many songwriters grow in confidence and ability, and some have also joined forces to write collaboratively after meeting at the night.

A great night to get involved in, they’ve also recently run their first night in Newcastle, so keep and eye on their Facebook page if you’d like to join in.

I can’t believe you’ve left out The Grove Inn, Back Row, Holbeck. Been doing open mics, jam sessions and gigs for years. It has a folk club at one point run by Cyril Tawney. And Mark Knopfler jammed there regularly. I could go on!
I don’t work there – just loved it for years.

The Grove is about as good as it can get – I understand how places can get overlooked with so many around, but there is no where quite like The Grove. It’s a small stage which has been graced by big names over the years.
