Global Café & World Shop: Bohemian Night Open Mic

The Global Café & World Shop revolves around community, development and equality. The World Shop is one of the UK’s largest fair-trade shops while The Global Café is a great night out or the perfect place to enjoy tea and coffee. The weekly open mic night is hosted by a talented local musician called Robert Sowden who has been successfully running the night for years.

The Castle Tap is an independent pub that is always looking at ways to support local musicians and causes. Which is why they run many musical events monthly, including brilliant jam nights for locals. Dan Kemp hosts the monthly Shanty Sessions, he is a very talented folk musician who loves keeping music alive in the local community.

The Shanty Sessions are very chilled out and are purely acapella with no amplification through PA or mics. The session takes place in front of the fireplace in the bar which really brings a cosy, intimate vibe that makes everyone feel welcome. Everyone at the pub is encouraged to join in, whether it’s just watching or singing along.

This jam night is purely based around sea songs/shanties and it’s a great creative community to be a part of. You can either lead one of the songs or just sing along with the chorus. The group is very inclusive but also very welcoming to all newcomers.
